Automatic Swing Gate Openers in Kenya: Specs and What to Check

How swing gate openers work, single vs double leaf, the specifications that matter and how to tell if your swing gate is ready to automate.

Automatic Swing Gate Openers in Kenya: Specs and What to Check

Swing gates are everywhere in Kenya, from bungalows in Ruiru to townhouses in Nairobi's estates. Many of them are still opened by hand, which means getting out of the car at the gate every single time. An automatic swing gate opener changes that: the leaves open as you arrive and close behind you, at the press of a button.

Here is what a swing gate opener is, the specifications that matter, and what to check before you automate your gate.

How a swing gate opener works

Each gate leaf gets its own actuator arm. One end is bolted to the gate pillar or wall, the other to the gate leaf. Inside the arm, a 24V DC motor drives a screw that makes the arm longer or shorter. As the arm extends, it pushes the leaf closed; as it retracts, it pulls the leaf open (or the reverse, depending on how it is mounted). A control box near the gate receives the signal from your remote, runs both arms in the right order and stops them at the end of travel.

With a double gate, the control box opens one leaf a moment before the other and closes them in the reverse order, so the leaves do not clash where they meet.

Single leaf or double leaf?

  • Single leaf: one arm, for pedestrian gates or narrow vehicle gates.
  • Double leaf: two arms, for the typical pair of gates at a driveway entrance. This is the most common kit we install.

Is your swing gate ready to automate?

Before fitting an opener, we check the gate itself. A motor makes a good gate convenient, but it cannot fix a bad one. Look for these things:

  1. The leaves swing freely by hand, without dragging on the ground or binding at the hinges.
  2. The hinges are strong and not worn. Sagging leaves need new hinges before automation.
  3. The pillars are solid. The arm bracket pushes against the pillar every time the gate moves, so a cracked or hollow pillar may need reinforcing.
  4. There is space behind the pillar for the arm bracket, and the ground inside is clear for the leaves to open fully.
  5. The leaves are not too solid for the wind. Large solid sheet leaves act like sails, so the opener must be rated for them.

Inward or outward opening?

Most Kenyan swing gates open inwards, into the compound, which is the simplest arrangement for automation. Outward opening is possible with suitable brackets, which is useful where the driveway slopes up steeply behind the gate. Check that outward-opening leaves will not sweep into a public road or footpath.

What happens during installation

Every swing gate installation we do follows the same steps: we fix the pillar and gate brackets at the correct positions, mount the arms, install and wire the control box, set the open and close positions, program the remotes, add photocells if ordered and test the movement repeatedly. Finally, we show you how to use the manual release. Here is a recent job in Membley, Ruiru:

And one in Kamakis, where we upgraded a manual double gate:

Useful extras for swing gates

  • Photocell safety sensors. Swing leaves sweep through a wide area, so sensors that stop the gate when something is in its path are strongly recommended.
  • Backup battery. Keeps the gate working during power cuts.
  • Wi-Fi smart controller. Open the gate from your phone, wherever you are.
  • Electric lock or drop bolt for extra security on large leaves.

Frequently asked questions

Can a swing gate opener be fitted to an old gate?

Yes, as long as the gate is solid, the hinges are sound and the leaves move freely. We often fix hinges or add a reinforcing plate before fitting the arms.

What happens to a swing gate during a power cut?

With a backup battery, it keeps working. Without one, you use the manual release key to free the arms and open the leaves by hand.

How long do swing gate arms last?

With correct sizing, good installation and basic servicing, stainless-steel arms give many years of daily use.
