Sliding vs Swing Gate Motor: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Sliding or swing gate automation? Compare space, driveway slope, gate weight, security, safety and upkeep for a typical Kenyan compound.

Sliding vs Swing Gate Motor: Which Is Right for Your Home?

One of the first decisions when automating a gate is whether it should slide or swing. If you already have a gate, the decision is often made for you, because it is usually best to automate the gate you have. If you are building, or replacing an old gate, the choice is open. Here is how the two compare in real Kenyan compounds.

Sliding or swing, there is an automation kit for both.

Quick comparison

Sliding gate motorSwing gate opener
Space neededA clear run along the fence, roughly the width of the openingClear ground inside (or outside) for the leaves to sweep through
DrivewayNeeds a level trackCopes better with a gentle slope, as long as the leaves clear the ground
Heavy gatesVery good: our kit handles up to 1,000 kgGood: our kit handles up to 350 kg per leaf
Wide openingsExcellent; add gear rack in 1 m lengthsUp to 3.5 m per leaf with our kit, so about 7 m for a double gate
WindNot affectedLarge solid leaves catch wind; the opener must be strong enough
HardwareOne motor, gear rack, limit switch magnetsOne actuator arm per leaf, plus a control box
UpkeepKeep the track clean and the rack alignedKeep hinges free and arm brackets tight

When a sliding gate motor is the better choice

  • Your driveway is short. If cars park close to the gate, a swing gate has nowhere to open. A sliding gate stays in line with the fence.
  • The gate is heavy or very wide. Solid steel gates are common in Nairobi, and sliding motors handle weight well because the gate rolls on wheels while the motor only pushes it along.
  • The ground slopes upwards behind the gate. A swing gate leaf would hit the ground; a sliding gate does not care what is behind it.
  • You want to add gate width later. Gear rack comes in 1 m lengths, so longer gates are straightforward.

When a swing gate opener is the better choice

  • There is no space along the fence. If a wall, a guard house or a neighbour's boundary sits beside the gate, there may be nowhere for a sliding gate to go.
  • You already have a good double swing gate. Automating it is usually far cheaper than replacing it with a sliding gate.
  • The track would be hard to keep clean. On murram or where soil washes onto the driveway in the rains, a sliding track fills up. Swing gates have no bottom track.
  • You like the look. Many homeowners prefer how a pair of swing gates opens to welcome a car.

Speed and convenience

Both types open in well under a minute. In practice, the difference you feel is small. What matters more is that you can open the gate while still approaching it, using the remote, or from your phone with a Wi-Fi smart controller.

Security

Both are secure when installed properly. A sliding gate motor locks the gate in place through its gearbox when it stops. Swing gate openers hold each leaf firmly closed through the actuator arms, and many owners add a drop bolt or an electric lock for extra strength. For both types, a backup battery means the gate stays secure and usable during power cuts.

Safety

Any automatic gate is a heavy moving object. For both types we recommend photocell safety sensors, which stop the gate from closing on people, vehicles or pets. With swing gates, also think about where children play, because the leaves sweep through a wide area.

Cost

Costs vary with the gate's weight and width and with the extras you choose. A double swing gate needs two actuator arms, while a long sliding gate needs extra gear rack. We explain everything that affects the price in how much does a gate motor cost in Kenya?

Our recommendation

If you already have a sound gate, automate the type you have. If you are starting fresh and have room along the fence on a level driveway, a sliding gate is usually the most practical option in Kenya. If space beside the gate is the problem, choose swing. When in doubt, send us a photo: we look at gates every day and can tell you quickly which way to go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a swing gate into a sliding gate?

Yes, a fabricator can rework a gate to slide, but it involves a track, wheels and guide rollers, so it costs more than automating the gate you already have.

Which is quieter?

Both are quiet when well installed. A sliding gate with a nylon gear rack is particularly quiet.

Can both types be opened with a phone?

Yes. A Wi-Fi smart controller works with both sliding and swing gate motors.
