If you are still getting out of the car to push your gate open, at night, in the rain, with the engine running, you are not alone. Most gates in Kenya are still opened by hand. The good news is that almost any sturdy sliding or swing gate can be automated, and the equipment has become far more affordable and reliable than it was a few years ago.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know before you buy an automatic gate motor in Kenya: the main types, how to match a motor to your gate, what to do about power cuts, which extras are worth paying for, and what a proper installation should include. It is written by the team that supplies and installs gate motors every week from our base in Baba Dogo, Nairobi.
What is an automatic gate motor?
An automatic gate motor (also called a gate opener or gate operator) is an electric drive unit that opens and closes your gate when you press a button on a remote, tap an app on your phone, or trigger an access control device. A complete kit is more than the motor itself. It usually includes:
- The motor unit with its gearbox and control board.
- A drive system to move the gate: a gear rack for sliding gates, or actuator arms for swing gates.
- Limit switches that tell the motor where to stop when the gate is fully open or closed.
- Remote controls, normally two to start with.
- A manual release key, so you can still open the gate by hand in an emergency.
- Optional extras such as a backup battery, photocell safety sensors and a Wi-Fi module for phone control.
The main types of gate motors in Kenya
1. Sliding gate motors
Sliding gates are very common in Nairobi estates because they do not need space to swing inwards or outwards. A sliding gate motor sits on a concrete base beside the gate and turns a small toothed gear (the pinion). That gear meshes with a gear rack fixed along the bottom of the gate, pushing the gate open and pulling it closed. Our sliding gate kit, for example, is rated for gates of up to 1,000 kg and runs on a 24V DC motor.
If you want to understand the mechanics in detail, read how an automatic sliding gate motor works.
2. Swing gate openers
Swing gates open like a door, either as a single leaf or as a pair (double leaf). A swing gate opener uses an actuator arm on each leaf. The arm extends and retracts to push the leaf open and pull it shut. Stainless-steel arms resist rust, which matters in coastal areas and during the long rains. Our swing kit handles leaves of up to 3.5 m wide and 350 kg each.
3. Roller shutter door motors
Roller shutters on shops, garages, warehouses and godowns can also be motorised. Instead of a gear rack or arms, a tubular or side-mounted motor rolls the shutter curtain up around a drum. It is the same idea, applied to a door instead of a gate.
4. Boom barriers and access control
Estates, apartments, offices and car parks often add a boom barrier or an access control system on top of gate automation, so that only residents, staff and approved visitors get in. See our barriers and access control service for more.
Sliding or swing: which suits your property?
The right choice depends mostly on your compound, not on the motor. A sliding gate needs a clear run along the fence line roughly as long as the gate opening. A swing gate needs clear ground for the leaves to sweep through, ideally on a level or gently sloping driveway. We compare the two in detail, including cost, speed, security and maintenance, in sliding vs swing gate motor: which is right for your home?
How to choose the right gate motor
When you ask for a quote, the installer should check these points before recommending a kit:
- Gate weight. Steel gates in Kenya are often much heavier than owners expect, especially solid sheet or decorative gates. Always pick a motor rated comfortably above the real weight of the gate.
- Gate width. For a sliding gate this sets the length of gear rack needed. For a swing gate it decides whether each leaf is within the opener's maximum width.
- How often it opens. A family home might open the gate ten times a day. An apartment block or a business can be ten times that, which calls for a heavier-duty motor.
- The condition of the gate. A motor cannot fix a gate that drags, wobbles or has a bent track. Wheels, rollers, hinges and guides should run freely by hand first.
- Power supply. Where will the mains connection come from, and how long are your typical power cuts?
Power cuts: do not skip the backup battery
Kenya Power outages are a fact of life, so the most common question we get is "what happens when there is no power?" A 24V DC sliding gate motor with a backup battery keeps working through an outage for a number of open and close cycles, depending on the battery and how heavy the gate is. If the battery runs flat, the manual release key lets you open the gate by hand. We explain the options, including solar charging, in our guide to gate motors and power cuts.
Extras that are worth having
- Photocell safety sensors. An infrared beam across the opening stops the gate from closing on a child, a car or a pet. We recommend them on every installation.
- Wi-Fi phone control. A smart controller lets you open the gate from an app, from anywhere with internet, for example to let in a delivery while you are at work.
- Extra remotes. One for every driver in the house saves arguments in the morning.
What does an automatic gate motor cost in Kenya?
The price depends on the type of gate, its weight and width, the extras you choose, the length of gear rack or cabling needed and where you are located. We break all of this down in how much does a gate motor cost in Kenya? The quickest way to get an exact figure is to send us a photo of your gate on WhatsApp with your location.
What a professional installation should include
A gate motor is only as good as the way it is installed. A proper job includes a level concrete base or mounting plate, a correctly aligned gear rack (or correctly positioned swing arms), neat and protected wiring, limit switches set for exact stopping points, remotes programmed, the safety features tested and a full demonstration of the manual release before handover. Supply only, or supply and install?
If you have a trusted technician, you can buy a complete kit and have it delivered. If not, we supply, deliver and install, then remain available for servicing and repairs. We work across Nairobi and its surroundings, including Ruiru, Kamakis, Githurai and Utawala, and we deliver countrywide.
Frequently asked questions
Can any gate be automated?
Most sliding and swing gates can be automated if they are structurally sound and move freely by hand. Some gates need minor repairs first, such as new wheels, a straightened track or better hinges.
How long does installation take?
A standard sliding or swing gate installation is usually completed in a day, including testing and handover. Extra concrete work or long cable runs can add time.
Will the gate still open during a power cut?
Yes, if you fit a backup battery. Without one, you can open the gate by hand using the manual release key.
Do you install outside Nairobi?
Yes. We deliver countrywide and install across Kenya. Send us your location and we will confirm the arrangements.
Ready to stop pushing your gate?
Send a photo or short video of your gate and your location to WhatsApp 0754 209 283, or request a quote. We will recommend the right kit and give you an exact price.
