"How much is a gate motor?" is the question we hear most. The honest answer is that it depends on your gate. Two homes on the same street can need quite different kits. This guide explains exactly what determines the price of an automatic gate motor in Kenya, so you can compare quotes properly and avoid paying twice.
The seven things that decide the price
1. Sliding or swing
A sliding gate uses one motor and a gear rack. A double swing gate needs two actuator arms and a control box. The two kits are priced differently, and which one is cheaper for you depends on the next points. If you have not decided yet, read sliding vs swing gate motor.
2. The weight of the gate
Heavier gates need stronger motors. A light tubular gate and a solid steel sheet gate of the same size can be hundreds of kilograms apart. Choosing a motor that is too small to save money is a false economy: it strains, overheats and wears out early. Our sliding gate kit is rated for up to 1,000 kg, and our swing kit for up to 350 kg per leaf.
3. The width of the gate
For sliding gates, width decides how much gear rack you need. Our kit includes 4 m of rack, and longer gates need extra rack in 1 m lengths. For swing gates, each leaf must be within the opener's maximum width (3.5 m per leaf for our kit).
4. Backup battery
Given how often the power goes off in many parts of Kenya, a backup battery is close to essential. It adds to the price but means you are never locked in or out. Read more in our guide to gate motors and power cuts.
5. Smart and safety extras
- Wi-Fi smart controller to open the gate from your phone.
- Photocell safety sensors to stop the gate closing on people and cars.
- Extra remote controls for every driver.
Each adds to the total, but none is expensive compared with the motor itself, and the photocells in particular are worth it if there are children around.
6. Installation and site work
Installation covers mounting the motor, fitting the rack or arms, wiring, setting limit switches, programming remotes and testing. The price goes up if the site needs extra work, for example:
- A new concrete plinth for the motor.
- A long cable run from the house to the gate.
- Repairs to the gate first: new wheels, a straightened track, better hinges or a reinforced bottom rail.
7. Your location
We are based in Baba Dogo, Nairobi. Jobs in Nairobi and nearby areas such as Ruiru, Githurai, Kamakis and Utawala are straightforward to schedule. For other towns we deliver countrywide, and the transport cost depends on the distance.
Supply only vs supply and install
You can buy a complete kit for delivery and have your own technician fit it, or have us supply and install. Supply only costs less up front. Supply and install means one team is responsible for everything working properly, from the motor to the final test.
How to compare gate motor quotes
A cheaper quote is not always cheaper. Before you compare figures, check that each quote includes:
- The motor's rated maximum gate weight, and that it suits your gate.
- How many metres of gear rack (for sliding gates) or how many arms (for swing gates).
- How many remotes.
- Whether a backup battery is included.
- Whether installation, cabling and the concrete base are included.
- What happens if something goes wrong after installation, and who you call.
Why we do not publish one fixed price
Prices of imported motors and accessories change with stock and exchange rates, and every gate is different. Instead of a headline price that rarely matches the final bill, we give you an exact quote for your gate. It takes a few minutes: send us a photo or short video of the gate, its rough width, your location and the extras you want.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to automate an existing gate or to buy a new one?
Automating a sound existing gate is almost always cheaper. Replacement only makes sense when the gate is badly damaged or far too heavy for its hinges or wheels.
Do I have to pay for a site visit?
In most cases a photo or video on WhatsApp is enough for us to quote. If your site is unusual, we will tell you before arranging a visit.
Can I add phone control or sensors later?
Yes. A Wi-Fi controller, photocells and extra remotes can all be added to an existing automatic gate.
